Rules And Facts

Intro

Roller hockey differs from ice hockey and is played with two types of skates: inline and quad. Inline refers to roller blades or skates where the wheels are centered in one line on the bottom of the foot. Quads are otherwise known as roller skates, which happen to have four wheels that form a rectangle on the bottom of the foot, with two at the toes and two at the heel, side by side. Roller hockey is not the same as ice hockey and has its own set of roller hockey rules.

The Rink

The rink must be made up of wood, cement, asphalt or a plastic surface and should be surrounded by boards. Other roller hockey rules that apply to the rink consider the dimensions, goal posts and nets, goal crease and goalkeeper's privileged area, the division of the playing surface, the face off area, high zone/end zone face off spots, benches and signal/timing devices.

Teams

A team must have at least five players in the rink, including the goalie. A team cannot have more than fifteen players on the roster with a maximum of two goalies.

Equipment

The main piece of equipment is the stick, which must be made up of wood, carbon composite, graphite, aluminium or rubber composite materials. Further roller hockey rules go on to state regulations for stick/blade sizes, skates, goalkeeper's equipment, protective equipment, dangerous equipment, uniforms, the puck or ball and equipment measurement.
